Trip Itinerary
Our detailed itinerary is always subject to change as we constantly research, update our trip, and coordinate with our friends in Portugal to work with their schedules! This itinerary is a great resource for getting an idea of what kind of experiences you’ll have when you travel with us to Portugal.
Day One - Porto
Welcome to Portugal! Upon landing in Porto, our private driver will transfer you from the airport to our group hotel, where your tour host will greet you in the lobby to facilitate a seamless check-in process. Later in the afternoon, we'll gather for our welcome meeting.
Following that, we'll get to know Porto on a walking city tour led by our knowledgeable guide and friend, Gustavo. Porto is a pedestrian paradise, and we’ll get a taste of that firsthand by visiting some of the city’s highlights and important historical landmarks.
After we’ve worked up an appetite, we'll taste our first Portuguese dishes at a home-cooked dinner with our friend, Helena. Enjoy the spectacular view of the river from the balcony while sipping on some local port - the best way to start our trip!
Day Two - Porto
In the morning, we’ll meet up with Gustavo again and head to his hometown of Lavra, a fisherman’s village just outside of the city. Make sure to bring your camera to capture the seaside views.
For lunch, we’ll dine on the freshest fish you’ve ever had, caught just hours before by the local fisherman. Lavra is where many Porto locals go when they want the best fish, so you know it’s gonna be good!
We’ll end the afternoon with a drink at a beautiful beach club, and then head back to the city. You’ll have a few hours free before we make our way to join our friend, Jorge, and his family at their home and have a traditional dinner together.
Day Three - Porto
The morning and lunchtime is yours to explore and we’re happy to provide recommendations. If you want to visit any museums or do some shopping, this is the perfect time to do so.
In the afternoon, we’ll head to the Casa Ferreira port cellar for a private tour and tasting. What makes Casa Ferreira special is that it is one of the last port houses to still be Portuguese owned and run, and it grew into prominence under the wise direction of Dona Antónia in the 1800s. It’s a impressive story of empowerment and resilience in an age of male power and in a male-dominated industry.
After our tour and tasting, we’ll hop on a private boat and enjoy a sunset cruise along the Duoro River. On board, we’ll enjoy a light dinner and Portuguese champagne. Saúde!
Day Four - Duoro Valley
This morning we say goodbye to Porto and head into the Duoro Valley with our trusty guide, Gustavo, by our side making sure we stop at the best places along the way to take in the breathtaking view of the vineyards, terraced landscapes, and charming towns and villages along the water's edge.
After lunch, we’ll visit the “Stairway to Heaven” in Lamego and get our steps in…only going down though! From the top of the staircase all the way down the bottom, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the Valley.
After arriving to our hotel, we’ll take some time to freshen up before we have dinner together and close out the day.
Day Five - Duoro Valley
After a leisurely breakfast and relaxing morning, we’ll enjoy an exclusive tour and wine tasting at the Ferreira estate with one of Dona Antónia’s last living descendants. During the tasting, we’ll enjoy fresh fruit, cheeses, and small bites, enough for a light lunch.
Next, we’ll visit a historical 18th century manor, still occupied by the family today. At the beautiful property, we’ll visit the cellars and enjoy a second wine tasting, as well as an olive oil and honey tasting.
After we can’t possibly eat or drink anymore, we’ll head back to the hotel and you’ll have the evening free.
Day Six - Coimbra, Évora
Today we make our way south! Along the way, we’ll stop in Coimbra for a traditional lunch of roasted suckling pig, which was voted one of the 7 Gastronomic Wonders of Portugal.
After a scenic drive we’ll end in Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was recently designated Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2027. The ancient city is full of impressive history and unique sites, which we’ll learn all about and visit on our walking city tour in the afternoon.
We’ll end the evening with dinner and a traditional Cante Alentejano show, a Portuguese music genre based on vocal music without instruments that is native to the Alentejo region where Évora is located.
Day Seven - Évora
Today we slow things down a bit and spend the morning with our friends, Sofia & Joaquim. During our visit to their home and peaceful garden, Sofia and her husband Joaquim will welcome you and make you feel at ease, so prepare for a truly local Portuguese day. Besides being a professional chef and an expert in culinary experiences, Sofia used to be a tour guide, so expect a truly interesting experience, where Portuguese food, culture and history will be mixed together.
We’ll roll up our sleeves and prepare lunch together under Sofia’s guidance and then dine on traditional dishes from around Évora while Sofia and Joaquim tell us stories about their growing up and tales of local life.
In the afternoon, you’ll have time alone to wander the town, visit some of the historical ruins, or enjoy some shopping. Dinner is on your own tonight…if you still have room!
Day Eight - Évora
On our final day, we’ll head to the cork fields in the countryside for a cork trekking experience with our local guide, Celino. We’ll explore the cork oak forest and learn all about the importance of cork to the region. For lunch, we’ll enjoy a refreshing picnic in the cork fields and the peaceful ambiance of the countryside.
You’ll have a few hours to yourself at the hotel before we come back together for our farewell dinner at a small farm-to-table restaurant that is open only for us tonight! We’ll savor a various dishes that showcase and celebrate the local products and traditional flavors of the area.
Day Nine - Departure
Our departure day begins with an optional group breakfast at the hotel before saying farewell. We will coordinate a private driver and transfer to the Lisbon airport or train station on your behalf.
