Oyakodon (Japanese Rice Bowl) & Sesame Spinach Salad

Join Yoko from Osaka and learn to make this classic Japanese comfort food - oyakodon - a tasty Japanese rice bowl, or “donburi,” in which chicken, egg, and other ingredients are all simmered together in a kind of soup that is made with soy sauce and stock, and then served on top of a large bowl of rice. Paired on the side will also be goma ae, a delightful sesame spinach salad.

Ingredients & Preparation
Have your ingredients pre-measured and prepped before the class for a more seamless experience.
If you do not have certain ingredients, our chefs will do their best to suggest substitutions.
Before class: toast sesame seeds for garnish for goma ae (optional)
Oyakodon (Chicken & Egg Rice Bowl)
Serves 2 people
1.5 cups rice (can be frozen)
1/2 of a chicken
2 eggs
1/2 onion
1 cup vegetable or chicken stock
1 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten-free option)
1 tablespoon of sugar or Mirin
optional: chili powder, green onions
Goma ae (Sesame Spinach Salad)
Serves 2 as a side
2 cups raw spinach
1 tablespoon tahini
1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten-free option)
1 tablespoon of sugar or Mirin
optional: 1-2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds (black or white or mix) for garnish
Equipment

General Steps
Make the rice.
Cook the chicken.
Prepare the goma ae.
Plate the rice bowl and enjoy!
