Sonhos (Portuguese Donuts)

Join Chef Ana from Lisbon and learn to make one of Portugal’s famous holiday treats: Sonhos - a fluffy, light donut dipped in fresh orange syrup. Try one, and you’re hooked for life!

Please be mindful of the time of the class you sign up for and your own time zone. After registration, you will receive a link to the Zoom online meeting session we will use.


Ingredients & Preparation

Have your ingredients pre-measured and prepped before the class for a more seamless experience.

If you do not have certain ingredients, our chefs will do their best to suggest substitutions.


Sonhos ~ Portuguese Donuts
12 donuts

Donuts

  • 250ml (1 cup) milk

  • 250ml (1 cup) water

  • 150g (2/3 cup) butter

  • 350g (2 3/4 cups) pastry flour (or all purpose flour)

  • 8 eggs

  • Oil for frying (about 4 cups for a 20cm/8in diameter pan)

  • Sugar and cinnamon powder for dusting

Orange Syrup

  • 500g (~2 cups) sugar

  • 200ml (3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons) water

  • 1 orange

Equipment

Certain commonly used kitchen tools are not listed here such as cutlery, dishes, mixing bowls, pots and pans. Any additional equipment is listed here.

  • 1 bowl

  • 1 small to medium pot for frying

  • 1 spatula

  • 1 small pot

  • 2 tablespoons

  • 1 skimmer or slotted spoon

  • paper towel

  • 1 plate

General Steps

  1. Make sonhos dough

  2. Fry the donuts

  3. Prepare the syrup

  4. Assemble and enjoy
